Hatching Page 2 Hatching Page 3 I save an image locally every 10 seconds, so we have a pretty good
record of the egg hatching. The first sign that something was up
came around 3:00 p.m. today. A minute or two before this, the
attending parent started moving around (I'm still not sure how to tell the male dove from the
female; hopefully they have it figured out).
In this image, we can see the egg starting to crack, as the parent assists. A couple of minutes later, we can see that half of the shell is gone: And then the parent takes the shell away. This leaves the little guy exposed for a few seconds. You can see
the head and the beak at the top of the shell, facing left. Here, we see the
parent returning to the nest. A couple of minutes later, the other half of the shell is gone. |
